CirCon#143: Reducing Value Leak as ITAD Heads for $40 Billion

Today’s newsletter sponsor: Blancco

Secure data erasure. Intelligent device diagnostics. Greater visibility across the technology lifecycle.

Discover how Blancco helps organisations securely manage devices from intake through to their next use.

Circular Showcase: Blancco

The device lifecycle isn’t fragmented. The way it’s processed is.

Every device that enters the secondary market needs dozens of small decisions made about it: is this drive clean, is this screen a grade A or a grade B, does this battery pass or fail, where does this unit have the most value? Individually, these decisions are made constantly, all across the industry. What's been missing is the ability to see how those decisions connect across the full device lifecycle.

Blancco has built certified data erasure and diagnostics software that now runs quietly behind mobile trade-in programs, ITAD operations and enterprise IT refresh cycles at a scale most of the circular technology industry never sees. But the more interesting story isn't any single decision Blancco helps make. It's what a device's full lifecycle looks like when an operator can see all of it at once, end to end.

One Journey, Not Several

Every device moves through the same six stages on its way to resale: intake, grading, erasure and verification, reimaging, processing, and channel routing. Ask most operators how their business is doing at any one of those stages, and they can usually tell you. Ask how the six connect, and the answer is typically a lot less certain.

Typically. Not universally. Because that's exactly the gap Blancco's platform closes for operators running on it today. Each stage doesn't just do its own job well, it feeds forward into the next, so the connections between intake, grading, erasure, reimaging, processing and routing are visible in one place, not scattered across five or six disconnected systems.

Why the Whole Matters More Than Any Part

A device that passes diagnostics clean but gets graded without that data in hand can lose the tier it should have qualified for. A device flagged as high-value at intake but routed through a generic channel can lose the margin that flag should have protected. The signal existed, it just didn't travel with the device.

Individually, none of these look like failures. Each stage did its job with what it had. Together, across the lifecycle, they're the difference between a device that reaches its ceiling and one that quietly falls short of it.

This is the problem Blancco's platform is built to solve: treating the device lifecycle as one continuous journey to manage, not six separate operations running well in isolation. Operators on Blancco's platform aren't waiting for this capability. They're already capturing value that the rest of the market is still leaving on the table, one handoff at a time.

And the challenge only gets bigger with scale. According to Global Market Insights, the IT asset recovery and disposition market is projected to roughly double by 2035, from $18.6B to $40.1B, bringing more devices, more variability and more handoffs where something can go missing. Throwing more people or more facilities at that growth doesn't solve it. Seeing the lifecycle as a whole does.

Live on the Platform Today

This is what Blancco's platform already delivers for operators running on it:

✅ Treats the device lifecycle as one connected journey, not six isolated stages
✅ Shows operators how a decision at one stage shows up two or three stages later
✅ Closes the handoffs between point tools that quietly leak value at every stage
✅ Extends end-to-end visibility across mobile trade-in and enterprise refresh workflows
✅ Helps providers catch the value and risk a stage-by-stage view is built to miss

Where to Go Deeper

Understanding how those stages connect is one thing. Understanding where value is being gained or lost across them requires the data.

Blancco's Kon Maragelis is teaming up with CCS Insight analyst Ben Hatton for a live session that walks the full device lifecycle, from intake and grading through to erasure and verification, reimaging, processing, and channel routing, with granular, independent secondary market data mapped to each stage.

It's built for operators thinking seriously about where growth is actually being lost and won: "The Value Leak Nobody's Pricing."

Returns to Revenue brings together leaders across retail, reverse logistics, returns and recommerce to explore how businesses can reduce costs, recover more value and create new revenue opportunities from returned products.

Taking place on 22 September at Unipart House in Oxford, the conference will focus on practical solutions to some of the biggest commercial challenges facing modern returns operations, from rising costs and product write-offs to value recovery and recommerce.

RecommerceBuzz brings together marketplaces, retailers, brands, investors and technology providers from across the global resale industry to explore the future of recommerce.

On 6–7 October in Berlin, the conference will explore the strategies, technologies and business models shaping the next phase of resale, while connecting organisations from across the global recommerce ecosystem.

Circular Tech Expo brings together enterprise technology leaders, ITAD providers, refurbishers, OEMs and solution providers to explore the technologies, partnerships and strategies advancing circular technology and IT lifecycle management.

Taking place on 13-14 October at Farnborough International, the event connects organisations across ITAD, refurbishment, data destruction, asset recovery, reverse logistics and enterprise IT, creating a dedicated meeting point for the circular technology industry.

Have a superb week and we’ll see you again on Friday!

Cheers to circularity,
